Immunohistochemical expression of p21 in normal tissues of salivary gland, pleomorphic adenoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (undifferentiated…

2009

Objective: Our study aimed to characterize alteration in the immunohistochemical expression of p21 in normal tissue of the salivary gland surrounding pleomorphic adenoma, the tumor cells of pleomorphic adenomas, and carcinoma arising in pleomorphic adenoma. Study design: A selected series of 29 cases of pleomorphic adenomas, and 27 cases of carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (undifferentiated and adenocarcinoma types) were examined. Results: The results showed that p21 expression was negative in the most components of normal tissue of the salivary gland surrounding pleomorphic adenoma, 24 cases out of 29 of the non tumour duct cells (82.8%), and 28 (96.6%) cases out of 29 of the acinar cells …

Pleomorphic adenoma of the lateral nasal wall: case report.

2008

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common tumour of the salivary glands. However, it is extremely rare for these to originate in the nose and even when they do so, it is most commonly in the nasal septum. It is important to be aware of the paucity of presenting symptoms (nasal obstruction and epistaxis), as the lesion may not be recognized immediately. Growth is generally restricted locally and the tumour is not known to spread to the neighbouring structures. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice. Recurrences and evolution to malignancy are not frequent, but long-term follow-up is recommended. The case is presented of pleomorphic adenoma arising from the lateral wall of the right nasal…

Immunohistochemical expression of estrogens and progesterone receptors in carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma-undifferentiated and adenocarcinoma types.

2009

Cancer of the salivary gland is one of the common cancers in the head and the neck regions. This type of cancer develops in the minor and the major salivary glands, and it sometimes metastasizes to other organs, particularly the lung. Morphologic mimicry and similarity in the expression of steroid hormone receptors between salivary gland tumors and breast tumors are well-known phenomena and are occasionally debated in the field of surgical pathology. The expression of sex hormone receptors in some tumors suggests a role for these receptors in tumor pathogenesis and therapy. Previous studies of the expression of estrogens and progesterone receptors in salivary gland tumors have reported conf…

Large-sized pleomorphic adenoma of the cheek treated with Nd:Yag laser: Report of a case and review of the literature

2020

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) mostly involves parotid glands, while extra-parotid localizations are relatively uncommon. Particularly, PAs of the cheek minor salivary glands with a size larger than 4 cm are exceedingly rare, with only few cases reported. Surgical treatment of PA usually consists in radical excision. However, despite a presumptive radicality, recurrences, sometimes followed by malignant transformation, may occur. Here we report a case of a large-sized (6 cm) PA of the cheek minor salivary glands in a 70 year-old female patient, successfully treated through a conservative approach, based on the use of Nd:YAG Laser (λ=1064 nm). No recurrences were observed after a 2-year follow-up.…

Surgical management of pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland in elderly patients: Role of morphological features

2014

AbstractThe neoplasms of the salivary glands account for 2% of head and neck tumors and the most common form is the Pleomorphic adenoma (PA). Parotid gland is affected from 80% to 90% of cases. In elderly these tumors occur mostly in females. These benign tumors are composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells that are arranged with various morphological patterns and subtypes. The classification of these tumors is also based on the amount and nature of the stroma. In literature there is an almost complete consensus that, in the major salivary glands, PAs are enclosed by a layer of fibrous tissue often called “capsule” but there is disagreement about the form, extension and thickness of th…

Multicentric recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenoma in a child

2009

Mixed tumours of the parotid gland are rare in childhood and recurrence of this tumour is infrequent. Some authors report a higher rate of recurrence with some histological subtypes, like hypocellular variant. Female sex and young age at initial treatment are also risk factor for recurrence. Also the first surgical treatment, tumour enucleation or parotidectomy, has been implicated as a cause for recurrence. We present a case of a multicentric doubly recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenoma, 7 and 14 years after tumour enucleation, in a 9-year-old child. All the nodules resected showed the hypocellular variant of pleomorphic adenoma. We consider the relationships between the choice of treatmen…

Hsp27 and Hsp60 in human submandibular salivary gland: Quantitative patterns in healthy and cancerous tissues with potential implications for differe…

2021

Tumors of the submandibular salivary gland (SMG) are uncommon but sufficiently frequent for the physician to consider them in routine examinations and for the pathologist to be prepared to differentiate them from other tissue abnormalities. However, scarcity of specimens makes training difficult, a situation compounded by the lack of accepted universal diagnostic guidelines. Furthermore, there is little information on the chaperone system (CS) of the gland, despite the increasing evidence of its participation in carcinogenesis as a biomarker for diagnosis and patient follow up, and in the mechanisms by which the tumor cells thrive. We are investigating this aspect of various tumors, and her…

ANP differentiates between primary Submandibular Gland Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Preliminary data

2021

The natriuretic peptide system consists of three ligands, Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP), Brain Natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-type Natriuretic peptide (CNP), and three natriuretic peptide receptors (NPR’s), NPRA, NPRB and NPRC. We investigated the expression levels of NPPA (encoding ANP) and NPR1 (encoding NPRA, the main receptor for ANP) in primary benign (pleomorphic adenoma) and malignant (squamous cell carcinoma, SCC) submandibular salivary gland (SMG) tumors, as well as in primary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We found that the NPPA and NPR1 expression levels were significantly different in SMG SCC versus OSCC, exhibiting a significant increase in NPPA and absence of NPR1 ex…
